WHO WE ARE
The Rockingham County Naturalist Club was started in 1972 to bring the citizens of our county into contact with the beautiful natural world around them, and to teach them about its forests, fields, and rivers.
COME WALK WITH US!
Once a month from September through June we take hikes or other outings on properties with natural attractions in Rockingham or nearby counties.
We choose the locations based on special features such as the presence of interesting birds, animals, plants, or scenery on the land. These are informal, moderate walking trips, usually on the third Sunday afternoon of the month. Their pace is relaxed and unhurried; we are out to enjoy nature and each other's company.
We don't have indoor meetings usually, but each December we have a covered dish dinner with an invited after-dinner speaker, and our June walk is combined with a picnic. One or more outings a year are visits to museums in our region or wildlife conservation facilities such as the North Carolina Zoo.
We carry out an informal bird count in Rockingham County each December.
LEARN ABOUT THE OUTDOORS WITH US
We often have experienced birdwatchers and amateur botanists with us on outings who help us identify birds, animals, and plants, including wildflowers. Some members also teach us how to photograph the interesting things we see, for later enjoyment and sharing with friends and family.
OUR COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
The Rockingham County Naturalist Club has a tradition of service to the community extending over several decades. For many years the club has participated in annual clean-up projects along the county's roadsides, rivers, and streams that have removed many tons of trash from the environment.
The club also has devoted a large effort to assisting the Upper Piedmont Research Station in developing and maintaining the Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail. We have helped secure grants for developing the trail; helped build structures for it; and helped maintain it.
